Thoughts From the Sidelines

'Inconsistent' is kindest way to describe Phillies this season

By Sumner Spence | Aug 01, 2014

The Phillies' last two games against the New York Mets have been a great illustration of why the season has been very disappointing to watch. In Tuesday's game, they had a dominating win of 6-0, thanks to great performances from Cole Hamels and Chase Utley. Hamels could've had a complete game shutout, but he was pulled out before the start of the ninth inning. He was great in that game and recorded eight trikeouts. Chase Utley also provided a lot of offense with a grand slam in the seventh inning. Then Wednesday rolled around and they proceeded to lose 11-2. That is ridiculous! Even if they don't trade anyone by tomorrow's deadline, they need to change the team somehow for next season. If I was in charge, Jonathan Papelbon and A.J. Burnett would both be traded now simply because the Phillies don't need them on the roster since they are in last place and too far out to make the playoffs. It's going to be a short season for the Phillies for sure.

It's amazing that preseason football starts next week. I have a very difficult time watching the preseason games because it's impossible to know all the players on the teams at this point. Let's hope nobody important gets hurt and that all the teams have a great preseason. I will stay informed on the progress through other news sources and stick with baseball and golf for my TV viewing efforts for a few more weeks. And with the Phillies looking so bad, I just might catch up on a movie or show I have wanted to watch!

These next two weeks are very important in golf because the American Ryder Cup team automatic qualification race will be over after the PGA championship in Kentucky next week. The top nine players will get an automatic spot on the team. Phil Mickelson will have a good chance to make it as he is in 11th place in the standings. Tiger Woods has to win both of the next two tournaments to qualify on his own, which is pretty unlikely, but he could end up being a captain's pick by Tom Watson. Either way he will have to start playing a lot better.
