Thoughts From the Sidelines

Inconsistent Phillies—once again

By Sumner Spence | May 29, 2014

The Philadelphia Phillies suffered a no-hitter for the first time in my lifetime this past week. Pitcher Josh Beckett of the Los Angeles Dodgers was a force to be endured, dishing out a no-hitter but also humiliating the Phillies even further with the final score of 6 - 0. In fact, that was the first time since 1969 that the Phillies suffered a no-hitter at home. It's even two stadiums ago! The following game they came back in force against the Colorado Rockies and won 9 - 0! These seesaw performances are driving me crazy. The only saving grace is how mediocre the entire National League East is performing as a division. Believe it or not, the Phillies are currently only seven games out of first place and four out of second place. The season isn't over yet.

There was big soccer news late last week. The U.S. team's 23-man roster was finally released and their star player, Landon Donovan, was not included for the World Cup lineup. I was somewhat surprised considering he is one of the best midfielders/forwards in U.S. soccer history. As disappointing as that is, I am more worried about the young defense that was picked being able to hold up with the difficult group of teams the U.S. has to play. The World Cup starts in only two weeks and will be on the ESPN networks.

Surprise, surprise. Tiger Woods will not be playing in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in North Carolina in June. That's actually not surprising at all. I just hope he can come back in time for the British Open in July.

Thanks to Fredman and Facebook I was able to follow the (finally played) final game for the Delaware state title for girls' high school lacrosse. Congrats to the Cape girls' team on taking the state title for the sixth straight season. OUTSTANDING! And to think that when I graduated in 2002 the girls' program had only just begun! Now it's down to the final game for the boys' team and Cape will have a tough game against Sallies this weekend. GO, CAPE!
