Thoughts From the Sidelines

It was a busy week in the sports world—except for golf

By Sumner Spence | May 22, 2014

I was very up and down about the Phillies until the end of last week when the offense finally woke up in the last two games against the Cincinnati Reds. The Phillies made up for their slump and scored 20 runs in the last two games against the Reds. I hope they can maintain the momentum. Even though Cliff Lee just went on the disabled list, his injury may not be that serious and if it is, we are in BIG trouble. I am going to choose to think positively for now.

In horse racing, California Chrome won the Preakness in a very close race. It will be a great story if he completes the Triple Crown, especially for Chrome's owners considering they did not spend that much money to purchase him. The Belmont is only a few weeks away, and the race is a tough one. It's the longest track and racing conditions can make a huge difference for who is favored. I'm putting my money on California Chrome.

The NBA playoffs are down to the final four with the Miami Heat up against the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference. In the Western Conference, it's the Oklahoma City Thunder against the San Antonio Spurs. I think Miami will end up playing San Antonio in the finals but these last few games should be very close, possibly going to six or seven games. The NBA draft lottery has finally taken place and the Philadelphia 76ers got the third pick, so we should get a very good player. They need all the help they can get. The actual draft doesn't take place until mid-June.

Locally the state lacrosse playoffs have begun for the high school teams. The boy's teams will play into next weekend to determine a winner but the girl's finals will be decided before we even get into Memorial Day weekend. Cape's girls team is vying for their sixth straight state title. That's pretty cool! Go Cape team's!
