Thoughts From the Sidelines

It's do or die time for the Phillies

By Sumner Spence | Jul 04, 2013

This week is put up or shut up for the Phillies because at the end of the week they play the Atlanta Braves, who are nine games ahead of them in first place. Unfortunately for them, they are spending the beginning of this week trying to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates have turned out to be the most surprising team in all of baseball so far. They are having the best season they've had in 20 years. As of now, the Pirates actually hold the best record in baseball at 21 games over 500. Pretty darn impressive even if they are not your team of choice. Since Barry Bonds left the team in 1993, the Pirates haven't even finished over 500 for a season! But I still can't find it in me to say "Go, Pirates." I will reconsider after we see what the Phillies do this week.

This week brought some record breaking in women's golf. Inbee Park won the U.S. Women's Open. She has won all of the major tournaments played this year so far on the LPGA tour. This is a very impressive feat in itself. She could very well have the chance to win a grand slam if she wins the women's British Open being held at St. Andrew's this year. This is only the second time this event has been held at St. Andrews for the women. There is actually some controversy coming out because the LPGA has five majors instead of four. In my opinion, if she wins the next one I think that should count as a grand slam.

On the PGA Tour this week, the AT&T National was played in Washington, D.C. It was billed as being hosted by Tiger Woods because of his affiliation with AT&T, but Tiger did not build this course. All other "hosted" events are on courses that the "host" had actually built. Might seem like I'm knit-picking but does anybody else agree with me?

Here's to everybody enjoying the holiday weekend and hopeful the monsoons are over! I will report on Wimbledon next week.
