Kings Creek Country Club names Gary Wheeler general manager
Kings Creek Country Club announced that Gary Wheeler has been appointed the club’s new general manager, with responsibilities for all its day-to-day operations, including golf and tennis programs, grounds, swimming pool, clubhouse, dining room, membership and accounting departments.
Wheeler, a resident of Selbyville, has been the clubhouse manager for the Rehoboth Beach private golf and country club since 2004. The general manager position has been vacant throughout his tenure at the club, until his elevation this week to the broader responsibilities.
Kings Creek President Craig Karsnitz said, “As our club has been growing in size and prestige, particularly our first-class golf program and our distinctive dining cuisine, the board of directors believes the leadership and initiatives Gary has introduced and overseen as clubhouse manager make him the ideal candidate to assume the broader responsibilities of general manager to carry the club into the future.”
Wheeler said, “I am grateful for the trust that the Kings Creek board has shown in me by promoting me to the general manager position. My goal remains to focus on the club’s mission statement to provide an outstanding, premier golf course that can be enjoyed by all players of all levels, and a family-friendly dining, social and club experience. I look forward to working closely with the department heads to maintain the club’s positive momentum that has been established over the last decade.”
Wheeler came to Kings Creek in 2004 after 17 years in various hotel and restaurant managerial positions. At that time, he was food and beverage director of the 440-room Carousel Resort Hotel and Condominiums in Ocean City, Md., and two other Carousel facilities in the area.
Prior to joining Carousel, he was general manager of Harpoon Hannah’s Restaurant and Bar in Fenwick Island. During Wheeler's tenure there, the restaurant was awarded a Top 100 Restaurants in the USA listing by Restaurant Hospitality magazine.
He began his hospitality career in 1987 with the Hunt Valley Marriott in Maryland, before relocating to Ocean City in 1997.
Wheeler was born and raised in Reisterstown, Md. He received a bachelor of science degree in business, with a concentration in marketing from Towson University.
He has been a member of the Club Managers Association of America for 10 years. In 2013, Kings Creek Country Club was recognized by Delaware Today magazine as being Delaware's best private golf club downstate.
