Lewes Farmers Market continues Nov. 2 at ShieldsOrder turkeys early
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market Fall Market continues Saturday, Nov. 2, with more than 20 vendors. From 9 a.m. to noon, the market will be held in the parking lot of Shields Elementary School at the intersection of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive.
The market will continue at Shields each Saturday morning through Nov. 23. The HLFM is the largest producer-only market in Delaware, named Delaware Today’s Best of Delaware Farmers Market for 2013 for the third year in a row and recently named the top celebrated Farmers Market in Delaware by American Farmland Trust.
This is the first year that the Historic Lewes Farmers Market has been held through the month of November. Remember that the farmers were asked to plant for the HLFM so that the market could continue this long into the year. The farmers hope that you will come to them and the other vendors as often as possible. They have invested in November crops in order to make this happen.
Nov. 23 will be a very special market day when many of the vendors of the summer will join the other regular fall vendors for the final market. There will be Christmas trees, wreaths and much more. Coffee can be purchased by the cup from Nancy’s Fine Foods (aka Verde), and Fifer Orchards sells hot cider by the cup. One can also pre-order a Thanksgiving turkey and pick it up Nov. 23. The turkeys are pasture raised and organically fed and processed and are from 12 to 25 pounds. A word to the wise - order soon as these birds will fly.
At its Shields location, the Market is continuing to process SNAP (EBT food stamps). To help lower economic barriers to local healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $10 in SNAP with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP Information Tent at the market to redeem their Bonus Bucks.
Specific types and varieties of fresh meat, seafood, fruit, vegetables, flowers, and plants are listed by vendor in the HLFM newsletter sent to patrons on the first Thursday of the month during the market season, and on the HLFM Facebook page. Newsletters the remainder of the month will highlight featured vendors and selected produce. To receive the HLFM newsletter, email firstname.lastname@example.org and be added to the HLFM subscription list.
