Lewes Farmers Market to hold last event of season Nov. 23
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will hold it last market of 2013 Saturday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Shields Elementary School parking lot in Lewes
A number of vendors from the summer who couldn’t be part of the fall market are returning for this last Saturday including Fischers' Farm with Christmas Trees and wreaths, Good News Natural Foods, Rainbow Farm with holiday wreaths, and Lavender Fields with their lavender gifts. Backyard Jams and Jellies and Baues' Busy Bees will have many holiday gifts available as well. There will also be egg nog and all the fixings for Thanksgiving. More than 24 vendors will participate in this last market of the 2013 season. More gifts will be available as the HLFM will have its book table set up with books and 2014 calendars at i discounts for the holidays. There is a great assortment of children’s books at bargain prices. (All sales are a donation to the HLFM.)
The HLFM continues to glean (gather together donated food from their vendors) to give to Casa San Francisco’s food bank located in Milton. Simply purchase something fresh from a vendor, and bring it to the HLFM table to donate to the food bank. The food pantry also needs a little bit extra for the winter, so the HLFM is sponsoring a food drive at this last market. Here are the specific items that the food bank has requested: spaghetti sauce, pasta, peanut butter, jams and jellies, canned fruits/vegetables/soups, boxed cereal, powdered or shelf stable milk, rice, and beans. Honor the mission and the health needs of folk who use the food bank by providing healthy foods. Patrons can bring these items as well to the HLFM table at the market.
This is the first year that the Historic Lewes Farmers Market has been held through the month of November. Remember that the farmers were asked to plant for the HLFM so that the market could continue this long into the year. They have invested in November crops in order to make this happen. The vendors continue to bring fresh, local goods to the market. Market patrons will find, among other offerings, pasture-raised, free-range chicken, Berkshire pork, lamb, jams and jellies, an array of fall vegetables, artisan cheeses, milk, butter, yogurt, artisan breads, apples, apple cider, apple cider and apple pie donuts, chicken and duck eggs.
At its Shields location, the Market is continuing to process SNAP (EBT Food Stamps). To help lower economic barriers to local healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $10 in SNAP with HLFM “Bonus Bucks.” SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP information tent at the market to redeem their Bonus Bucks.
During the off season, the weekly HLFM newsletter is sent to their patrons on a less regular schedule with information on market news, programs, and events. To be included, email firstname.lastname@example.org and be added to the HLFM subscription list.
