Lewes Little League Majors All-Stars opened the playoffs with a tough Woodbridge squad at Laurel Little League complex July 6.

After trailing 1-0, first baseman Tanner Virden, who went 2-for-2, started off a two-out rally with a single. Then the lights went out – literally. The game was halted in the fourth with Lewes batting. After a nearly 40-minute delay, the game was moved to a nearby field, where the Lewes squad turned on the lights with four more runs, going up 5-1.

Woodbridge battled back until Lewes center fielder Tellis Jones scooped up a hit and fired his cannon arm to catcher Jake Gelof to put the tag on a Woodbridge runner, ending the comeback at 6-3 in favor of Lewes. Jones, Timmy Vitella and Luke Johnson each slugged a double for Lewes. Very solid pitching performances were turned in by Johnson and Vitella.

The win set the Lewes team up for a game versus Laurel July 8.

In an earlier game July 6, the Rehoboth All-Stars dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to the hometown Laurel team. Luke Smailer pitched three innings, giving up just three runs while putting two in the book by the K. Mason Dobek pitched in relief, allowing two runs while striking out two. Curtis Purnell and Smailer both went 2-for-3 and Matthew Berdini went yard for the Rehoboth squad.

Rehoboth moved to the bottom bracket and were eliminated by Georgetown 20-14 July 7.
