Lewes Major League All-Stars led the Millsboro team 4-1 in the first championship game July 15 and seemed to be on their way to a District 3 Championship when the bats of Millsboro came alive and outscored Lewes 13-1 in the next eight innings to take the District 3 title.

After a 3-1 second tournament game loss to Nanticoke, Millsboro moved to the bottom bracket and battled back to a shot at the championship with a possible two-game series with the tough Lewes squad. They defeated Lewes 7-4 in the Sunday game, setting up a Monday night rematch for the District 3 title. They won the Monday night title game with a 7-1 showing.

A rained-out Saturday game gave Millsboro an extra day to get back its top pitchers, and that was a key in the two championship games.

"We did it the hard way, that's for sure," said Millsboro manager Lance Keeler. "We had a lot of pitching depth, and that obviously served us well. These guys are really fun to coach."

"They had a good pitcher [Vonnie Toppin] on the mound tonight," said Lewes manager Dave Vitella. "He had a nice fast ball and a good off-speed pitch and kept us kinda guessing all night. We came out a little flat in the beginning after last night's [Sunday's 7-4] loss. It took a lot out of us."

Lewes scored 24 runs in the five tournament games while Millsboro tallied 52 in its seven contests.

Lewes pitcher Luke Johnson led the team on the mound in the tournament while getting good support from Timmy Vitella, Jackson Ostroski and James Fleegle.

"Luke pitched extremely well and had great command of his pitches," said Vitella. "He was 2-1 in the tournament and lost a tough battle to Millsboro in the championship game."

Lewes was led at the plate by Timmy Vitella, Jake Gelof, Tellis Jones, Tanner Virden, Luke Johnson, Grant Evans and Jackson Ostroski.

The Lewes coaches were also quick to compliment the players that came off the bench to contribute to their great showing in the tourney.

"Grant Evans, Colin Anderson, Ryan Gibbons, Matthew Mattia and Mason Fluharty did a great job in some tough situations," said Vitella.
