Lewes promoting April 27 food-bank drive

Volunteerism effort; city nominee wins statewide recognition
Apr 26, 2013

The City of Lewes will be holding a food drive to benefit the Food Bank of Delaware this Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Drop-off locations are Lewes Fire Dept. Station 1 on Savannah Road, Kids' Ketch on Second Street, and Trinity Faith Christian Center on New Road. A food bank truck will be parked at the fire hall to receive donations directly and there will be barrels at Kids Ketch and Trinity Faith to receive donations there.

Items collected can be non-perishable foods, household or personal items, pet supplies, etc.

“Lewes is in a partnership with the Cape Henlopen School District to surpass last year's collection volume of 4,000 pounds,” said Mayor Jim Ford. “Please take some time to participate to assist those in need.”

He said students from Cape Henlopen High School are also participating in this year's drive, collecting items at the school. “It's all part of the Global Youth Service Challenge to get young people involved in efforts like this.”

Ford said there are often food drives during the Christmas holidays, but this one is separate. “Unfortunately there are people hungry throughout the year. Lewes is very blessed and this is one way we can help others who don't have as much.”

The community food drive is part of Lewes's efforts to take an active role in the national Jefferson Awards which recognize exemplary volunteer efforts.

During this year's awards ceremonies on Monday in Wilmington, a Lewes nominee for a youth award took top honors in her age category. Ford said the city nominated McKenzie Betts of Lincoln – part of the Cape Henlopen School District - for her efforts on behalf of a neighbor facing high medical bills after an auto accident. “McKenzie, when she was nine, wrote a children's book called Blue Bear Finds A Rainbow and then sold copies and gave the proceeds to her neighbor,” said Ford. “She was judged the top nominee among nominees from Lewes, Wilmington, Newark and Dover.”

This is the second year Lewes is participating in the food drive.
