LHS acquires Harbor of Refuge lighthouse lanternDescendant of lighthouse keeper donates historic artifact
Bob Savage, a Cape Henlopen High School graduate, resident of Milford and descendant of Floyd Savage, a keeper of Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse off Lewes's coast, donated this circa 1908 lantern from the lighthouse to the Lewes Historical Society Oct. 4.
The lantern would have been fueled by oil and provided the light that would have been visible for nearly 18 miles to mariners traveling to or near the Delaware Capes. The lantern that was saved by Bob's grandfather Floyd when orders came to dispose of it, and similar two back-ups, when new electric ones arrived to replace them.
