LHS offers full evening of history Sept. 20History Happy Hour, dinner and Speaker Series
The Lewes Historical Society will hold a History Happy Hour at 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, at the Hotel Rodney, a prix-fixe dinner option at the Rose & Crown at 5:30 p.m., and the first Speaker Series of the season at the Lewes Presbyterian Church Hall on Kings Highway at 7:30 p.m.
During this special History Happy Hour at the Hotel Rodney on the corner of Second and Market streets in historic Lewes, speaker James Morrison will present "The 1769 Transit of Venus: Part Science, Part History and Part Mystery." Morrison will discuss the importance of the rare event when Venus passes over the sun’s disk and why it was particularly important in 1769. In that year, the American Philosophical Society sponsored three observatories, including a temporary facility in Lewes. Morrison and a colleague in England are the first to have studied the historical records and presented a detailed description of the Lewes observatory.
For those interested in attending both the History Happy Hour and the Speaker Series, LHS has arranged for a dining option between the two events. Reservations are being accepted for a $25 per person, three-course, prix-fixe dinner at Rose & Crown in Hotel Rodney. Dinner will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. Reservations are required and space is limited. For more information and to make a reservation, contact LHS at 302-645-7670, Ext.10.
Dinner selections and payment are to be made at the restaurant at dinner time; $25 per person includes a first course of crisp calamari or onion soup or beet salad, a second course of chicken, swordfish or lobster roll and a dessert course of butterscotch pudding or peach cobbler.
In the first Speaker Series of the season, Winnie Lewis and the Friends of FLH will discuss the Fenwick Island Lighthouse. Admission is free, and no reservations are required.
