Local club champions crowned
Late summer and early fall is typically a great time for golf in the Cape Region, and thus far the weather has cooperated very nicely.
It is also the time when local golf clubs tend to close out their competitive seasons with final championship events.
For example, Kings Creek Country Club, just outside Rehoboth Beach, holds a season-long Net Match Play Golf Tournament, which finished at the end of August.
For the men, a qualifying and seeding round was held May 11, with 32 entrants. The ladies held their qualifier event June 1, with 22 entrants. After brackets were set up, 18-hole matches took place throughout the summer. The competition concluded with a 27-hole final match.
As Kings Creek sets up its Individual Net Stroke Play tournament, players record their gross score for each hole, with the player's handicaps deducted at the end of each round.
Dennis Durkin won the 2013 Board of Governors Cup for the men, and Vicki Tull won the Vice Presidents Cup for the ladies. Head golf professional Kevin Weist said that these are "among the most prestigious awards we give at Kings Creek Country Club, and we congratulate Dennis Durkin and Vicki Tull on their achievements."
Weist also noted, "This was one of the most exciting years for our club's Net Match Play tournaments, with many of the matches going down to the wire on the final holes."
Kings Creek also held its annual two-day Member-Member men's and ladies' tournaments Sept. 7-8, with 108 golfers participating, which Wiest said was a strong turnout.
Teams competed using four different competition structures during the 36-hole event. The first nine holes were played in a Scramble format. The second nine holes on Saturday used an Alternative Shot method, usually recognized as the most challenging way for partners to play together.
The initial Sunday nine holes use the Better Ball of Partners format, while the final nine holes use the Aggregate scores of the partners.
Stefanie Herndon and Diane Herndon won the Ladies Gross competition with a two-day four-over par performance.
Lisa Smith and Hope Adams won the Ladies Net championship with their combined 16-under par effort.
Scott Bourdreau and Jason Gaughan won the Men's Gross contest with a one-under par gross score. Pete Brockstedt and Bruce Marine's nine-under par total out them in first place in the Men's net category.
"This tournament showed us that there is still a lot of good golf to be played in the Rehoboth shoulder season this fall," Wiest said. "We appreciate the efforts that all the golfers made in these tournaments."
On Sept. 11, the Rehoboth Beach Country Club 18 Hole Ladies Golf group closed out the season, with an ABCD grouping Scramble format event.
Carole Ann Medd, C.A. Knoll, Linda Riley, and Adelaide Schultz finished first in the Gross category with a 72.
Barbara Collins, Arlene Simms, Kathleen Carroll, and Linda Tigani combined for first place in the Net bracket, with a sparkling 59.
Second Net honors went to Gayle Truitt, Pauline Porter, Carol Smith, and Joan Palmer, who finished only one stroke back.
Five different players won the day's closest to the pin contests.
Bee Ekdahl was best on the third hole, and Doris Rogers was closest on the fifth hole. Schultze won the contest on the 13th hole, while Medd put her approach closest on the 15th.
Sheila Halfpenny finished this part of the day's competition with her best approach on the popular 19th hole, perched between the clubhouse and Rehoboth Bay.
