U.S. Sen. Tom Carper is shown with Delegate Lydia August at his Georgetown office after her return from the Congressional Youth Leadership Conference held recently in Washington, D.C.

Fifteen-year-old August recently joined some 250 emerging leaders from across America for the nine-day gathering.  Delegates met their state’s senators and representatives on Capitol Hill to discuss important legislation, the students’ grassroots ideas and service leadership projects that stimulate the conference’s curriculum.

In immersive peer breakout sessions, the students debated controversial subjects such as renewable energy, business and personal internet privacy, homelessness, the International Monetary Fund, international conflicts and peace negotiations. Students held mock elections to establish a National Young Leaders’ Model Congress that passed bills written and proposed by the delegates.

Lydia, a representative at two regional Kiwanis Key Leader Conferences in 2012, is a media broadcasting major at Sussex Technical High School. She is learning television and film production to promote social causes, big and small.
