LEWES — Sen. Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes, has been selected to serve as a new member on the Delaware Sea Grant Advisory Council.

The council serves as the statewide external advisory body to the Delaware Sea Grant College Program, and helps define priority coastal issues relevant to Delaware.

Its members hail from marine-oriented business and industry, resource management and engineering firms, state government, public interest groups, the pre-college educational sector, and the media.

In a statement released March 12, Lopez said he is honored to have been asked to join the council. He will serve three years.

“The 6th State Senate district has a unique and special bond with the sea and as someone who deeply cares about our environment, I look forward to sharing the mission of Sea Grant with our local Cape Region constituents who I am humbled to serve,” he said.

The University of Delaware was designated as the nation’s ninth Sea Grant College in 1976 to promote the wise use, conservation and management of marine and coastal resources through high-quality research, education and outreach activities that benefit the public and the environment. UD’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment administers the program, which conducts research in priority areas ranging from seafood safety to coastal hazards.
