Love Grows On with memorial trees from Center for Horticulture
Planting a tree as a living memorial through the Delaware Center for Horticulture's Love Grows On campaign can be a meaningful way to let the memory of a loved one grow and flourish.
The DCH launched this new program in October during the biannual bare root tree sale, in cooperation with the Delaware Grief Awareness Consortium, a volunteer organization that connects grieving children and adults and promotes understanding of the grieving process.
“When we lose someone we love, we often feel so powerless. To know we can do something positive to honor their memory, something that creates shade and beauty for many others to enjoy – it is a comfort,” said DEGAC Secretary Sharon Simmons.
The enduring gift of community trees provides beauty, wildlife habitat and numerous environmental benefits to the community for years to come. For gifts to the DCH Tree Program of $100 or more, donors can cultivate a legacy for someone special and help increase Delaware’s tree canopy.
With the gift, the DCH will do the following: plant trees in Delaware in tribute to a loved one and send the donor a certificate, suitable for framing, with the loved one’s name; permanently display a personal message and photograph on the Love Grows On tribute web page; invite donors and their loved ones to a Love Grows On celebration to tie a yellow ribbon and personalized message tag around a tree with other Memorial Tree program donors. The yellow ribbons will remain on the trees throughout November, Grief Awareness Month.
The DCH cannot specify the type of tree or where it will be planted. However, at a donor’s request, the DCH will inform them about future volunteer tree plantings supported by memorial gifts.
The DCH supports numerous tree initiatives, including volunteer tree plantings, a bi-annual Bare Root Tree Sale, and a periodic Free Tree Program through available public funding streams.
