Man identified following fatal crash

By Melissa Steele | Oct 02, 2013

A Frankford man has been identified after police say he ran his pickup truck into a DART bus Oct. 1, seriously injuring some passengers near Georgetown.

The crash happened at 9:43 a.m. as Anthony J. Valenti, 55, drove his 2010 Dodge Ram pickup truck westbound on Old Furnace Road near Waller Road, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.

For unknown reasons, Fournier said, Valenti drove into the eastbound lane where he struck a DART paratransit bus on the driver's side. The crash forced the bus off the road and into a ditch where it overturned before landing upright, Fournier said.

The Dodge rotated in the roadway before coming to a stop. Valenti was properly restrained; he died at the scene, Fournier said.

An Infinity passenger car driven by Patricia Procino, 46, of Seaford traveling behind the bus swerved and drove into a ditch.

The bus driver, Jerri M. Konopka, 56, of Millsboro and seven passengers were taken to area hospitals. Four of the passengers were DART employees, said Jim Westhoff, community relations officer for the Delaware Department of Transportation.

Tara E. Beck, 41, of Bridgeville; Nathaniel Norwood, 54, of Georgetown; Konopka; and Procino were taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries.

George A. Bryant, 58, of Milton and Barbara J. Johnson, 54, of Seaford were taken to Milford Memorial Hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Frances V. Quailes, 93, of Seaford was taken to Nanticoke and later Christiana Medical Center where she is in guarded condition.

Corbert L. Cannon, 35, and Victoria S. Cannon, 29, both of Seaford were taken to Christiana Medical Center; Corbet for nonlife-threatening injuries and Victoria is in critical condition.

Police continue to investigate the crash. Old Furnace Road between Waller and Asbury roads was closed for about three hours following the crash.
