March 10 Shadow 10K kicks off inaugural Shadow Series

By Tim Bamforth | Feb 24, 2012

The inaugural Shadow Series, a group of four events that will be held at sunset in Cape Henlopen State Park, will be the first of its kind on the East Coast.  Each event will be held under a full moon and will offer runners in the area a chance to see Cape Henlopen State Park in a different light - or shadow. Here is a preview of the series:

The Shadow 10K - 5 p.m., Saturday, March 10, the kickoff event to the series: A 10K jaunt that will take runners along paved paths, down open trails and beside the quiet seashore.

El Cinco 5M - 6 p.m., Saturday, May 5:  A 5-mile fiesta, an endorphin-fueled frolic under the night sky.

Blue Moon 10K - 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 31:  A 6.2-mile romp guided by the year's only blue moon (the second full moon in a month). Relish the cooler temps of a summer night and even cooler companions - runners!

The Day After 5K - 5 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 22:  Some predict the world will end on Dec. 21, 2012. Runners are optimists, so we've scheduled this 5K for the day after. (If the world does end, your entry fee will be refunded.)

Mud, mud, and more mud
Just around the corner is the Second Annual Quest Fitness Mud Run presented by the Seashore Striders, being held Sunday, April 29, in Milton at the same location as last year, nicknamed The Farm.

Registration is open, and a male and female individual race will include 100 brave mudders, offering the more competitive participants a challenge, with awards to the overall and masters champions and top three in each age group. The team races, accepting 100 in each race, will again be broken up into three divisions: male, female, and coed.  Teams this year are not required to stay together but are encouraged to run together and support each other. A new event we will close the day with will be the mini-mudders, which will feature a 12 & under race of 50 kids racing through a quarter- to a half-mile of challenges.

“Our mud run is a great community event, and we really don’t think of it as a race, but more of a fun and challenging event where everyone helps each other,” said codirector Matt Carter of Quest Fitness. “This year the distance will be a bit less, but we will have more challenges, tougher challenges, and of course, more mud.”

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Harry Bonk Agricultural Scholarship Fund and the Milton Fire Department.

Friend-Uhl just misses U.S. indoor mile record

The Florida Naples News announced in early January that Cape graduate and Delaware Prep state champ at 800 meters, Sonja Friend-Uhl of Brentwood, Tenn., was going after the U.S. masters indoor mile record of 4:47.26. Sonja, 40, elected to go after the record at the historic 45th Hartshorne Memorial Masters Mile at the Cornell Invitational on Jan. 21 in Barton Hall, Ithaca, N.Y.

The record is held by Alisa Harvey, and although the indoor records are a little sketchy, the performance is also listed as the masters world record. Sonja, the executive director at FIT RX in Brentwood, Tenn., dominated the field, which included 46-year-old Harvey and hit the line in 4:49.8 with Harvey, of Manassas, Va., second in 5:05.9. Keep an eye on the the 2012 USATF Masters Championships to be held in March in Indiana. Great job, Sonja, and don’t worry - you have nine more chances to lower it.
