Thoughts From the Sidelines

March Madness comes in many forms this year

By Sumner Spence | Mar 27, 2014

As we dig out from yet another half-foot of snow, we are well into this year's college basketball madness as well. This year's college basketball tournament is living up to its name as much as it ever has with unexpected match-ups right from the start and crazy upsets, too.

Warren Buffet's billions are secure with Duke University losing its first game to little known Mercer and Kansas losing in the second round to Stanford. Perhaps the most surprising upset was Syracuse's loss to Dayton. Syracuse was considered a sure thing with how well the team had played for most of the pre-tournament season schedule. The Orangemen had started 25-0 and looked like they could be the number one seed within weeks of the end to the regular season.

The first number one seed to be eliminated from the tournament was Wichita State, which actually came into the tournament with an undefeated record of 34-0. It was unfortunate that the Shockers were placed in the most difficult bracket and ended up losing to Kentucky in the second round in what was a very good game. Even though I did not pick them in my pool, it would have been cool to see Wichita State go into the final round. This weekend will determine the Final Four and who may stand to win their office pools.

It's hard not to be a basketball fan at some level for the next two weeks even for those who are anxiously waiting for opening day in baseball. Most teams will have their opening games this Monday, March 31, and hopefully that means the end to snow, at least here on the East Coast!
