Marjorie Haseldine, journalist, mentor
Marjorie May Shaw Haseldine, 87, born Oct. 28, 1924, in Jamestown, N.Y., passed away Friday, Sept. 14, 2012.
Marge graduated from Jamestown High School in 1942, and went on to attend Syracuse University where she majored in journalism. She worked first as a cub reporter at the Post-Journal in Jamestown, and later at Fairchild Publications in Buffalo, N.Y. She then worked for Adam Edy Ad Agency in Buffalo until her marriage to Michael Cyril Haseldine May 26, 1956. An avid reader and writer, Marjorie later served as a mentor in the New Castle School District, where she spent many happy hours reading aloud to children.
Marge traveled extensively with Mike through his work, and resided in Canada and many places along the east coast before finally settling in Rehoboth Beach in the early ‘70s. They moved to Gloucester, Mass. during the 1980s, but returned to New Castle in the ‘90s where they remained until moving to Milton.
Marge and Mike had four children, Suzanne Elizabeth Pride Thurman, Sally Hope Geisser, Michael Cyril Haseldine Jr., and Jane Eyre Shaw Cole.
She has seven grandchildren, Ian and Carly Thurman, Emma Geisser, Thea and Eva Haseldine, and Nash and Beck Cole.
Marge was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Farnsby Shaw and Alta Pride Shaw; her siblings, Alta Pride Ulrich, Ada Jane Johnson Olmstead, and Walter Shaw Jr.; and her husband Michael Cyril Haseldine. Surviving are her children and their families.
Services will be private, and burial will be at the Lakeview Cemetery in Jamestown. Donations may be made to Read Aloud Delaware and Compassionate Care Hospice.
