Markell's leadership on education initiatives much appreciated
Common sense dictates that the economic future of Delaware and the United States depends on developing and maintaining a workforce capable of providing high-quality products and services that can compete effectively in both U.S. and overseas markets.
We should appreciate Gov. Markell’s leadership and commitment to the Common Core Standards. Despite some ill-informed opposition, all the standards do is make sure students are actually ready for the world into which they will graduate, which should be the fundamental goal of education. For the same reason we should support the Governor’s early childhood education plan when so many studies show that the early years are vital to a child’s success in life. We need to keep prioritizing funding for early education programs, as well as family and community partnerships, and encouraging early childhood centers to promote healthful eating and physical activity.
While there are still barriers to be overcome – not least of them being political gridlock in Washington – Gov. Jack Markell deserves our respect and gratitude for refusing to wait for someone else to take meaningful action to improve our education system.
