Matt Haley & Dr. Uday Jani to host cooking class
James Beard Award-Winning chef/restaurateur Matt Haley and local physician Dr. Uday Jani are teaming up to present their next installment of the Doc & Chef series, which focuses on healthy, simple to prepare food. The free cooking demonstration & educational seminar is scheduled for Feb. 24, beginning at 6:30, at Fish On in the Villages of Five Points in Lewes.
“We want to emphasize how many tasty, healthy foods are available locally to consumers,” says Dr. Jani, a longtime area physician, who has recently added a personalized concierge practice focusing on wellness. “Cooking with them is easy – you don’t need any special training.”
Some of the ingredients that Haley & Jani will showcase might surprise you. “Onion, garlic, ginger and olive oil all offer health benefits,” says Jani. “Nuts are high in Omega-3. You can gain the benefits of flaxseed just by sprinkling some on your salad or in your soup.” adds Haley.
Several of the other ingredients showcased during the classes are grown in the area. “We want to focus on healthy, local eating,” says Haley, who owns seven coastal restaurants. “We have so many amazing farms and farm markets around here. We’re so fortunate to have such great resources. Buying local is not only better for our health, but it also supports the area economy.”
The doc and the chef will also give consumers insight into how to use some of today’s newly popular health foods, such as quinoa. The ancient grain has recently become a chef favorite, but many people have commented to Haley they find themselves stumped when it comes to home applications & preparations. “It can be used as a side dish, a main course or even as a cold salad,” he says. “It’s a remarkably easy ingredient to integrate at almost any point in your diet.”
