McGlone can provide leadership for Rehoboth

By Lauri and George Chastain | Aug 02, 2014

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Tom McGlone to discuss my concerns with new housing being built in Rehoboth Beach.  Like many who live here, all I could visualise is even more cars. I felt McGlone’s ideas to manage this were sensible.

His idea is to pro-rate off street parking to occupancy as a prerequisite for all new housing.  As he explained, the current ordinance requires two off-street parking spots. In my mind, it would make sense that a new home with four-plus bedrooms would be to require the incorporation of off-street parking on the property for, say, one spot for each bedroom. Ideas certainly need to be discussed.

This is the kind of leadership thinking I think Rehoboth needs. I am voting for Tom McGlone August 9 for our next mayor.

Would be interesting to see how that fits in with coverage ratios on a 5,000 square foot lot, and how far back from the road a house must go to park 4 cars off the street.  Do we expect no children under driving age in the rentals?  Seems not to have been fully thought out yet.  And when 4 driveway slots are put in front of a 50' foot lot, there is no space left for day-trippers or dinner guests to park there, too, on the roadside gravel.

Those building spec houses will not like this much, and those selling teardowns will likely not be in favor.

But I agree that the Commissioners and planning department should take a look at the concept.
