Milford VFW Blue Hen Post 6483 Ladies Auxiliary is sponsoring two competitions for school-age youth in the Milford area.
Students in grades 9-12 can compete in the Voice of Democracy Competition and win thousands of dollars in scholarships, a trip to Washington, D.C. and dozens of other awards. Contestants write and then record a three-to-five-minute audio essay expressing their views of this year’s patriotic theme, Why I’m Optimistic About Our Nation’s Future.
State winners in the Voice of Democracy Competition receive at least a $1,000 national scholarship and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to enjoy the nation’s capital and compete for $152,000 in scholarships; first place receives a $30,000 scholarship.
Milford-area students in grades six, seven and eight have the opportunity to compete in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest and also win thousands of dollars. Students compete by writing a 300-400-word essay expressing their views of this year’s patriotic theme, What Patriotism Means to Me.
Winners in both the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contests begin by competing at the local post level. Post winners then advance to compete in the state competition. Deadline for all entries is Friday, Nov. 1.
