Milton organizing search for new town manager

Topic to be discussed at Oct. 3 personnel committee meeting

Source: File The Town of Milton is operating without a town manager after Win Abbott vacated his post last week.

Milton — Milton is moving on without former Town Manager Win Abbott. At its Sept. 23 meeting, town council briefly discussed the next steps in finding Abbott's replacement.

Abbott did not renew his contract with the town for a third year. He was hired in September 2011 after spending two years in the same position in Fenwick Island. His exit from Milton came rather abruptly, as he vacated his position shortly after notifying town officials of his intentions.

Town Solicitor Seth Thompson said the town has a few options moving forward. The charter allows council to appoint or designate someone as an interim town manager until a replacement is hired. It may also promote someone from within the current town staff.

“If the council does intend to post an ad, we have to figure out what qualifications are going to go in there,” Thompson said. Where the advertisement is posted to reach targeted applicants is also an element to be determined, he said.

Following the termination of former Town Manager George Dickerson, a town manager recommending committee was tasked with weeding through the resumes to find a perfect fit. When the position was last open in 2010-2011, the town received 19 applicants. Vice Mayor John Booros suggested the personnel committee could do the job this time around.

Mayor Marion Jones agreed and set a meeting for 4:45 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 3, to begin discussions regarding qualifications and the upcoming search. The committee will make recommendations to town council, who will have the final decision.

Council plans fill the vacant position in a timely manner. When asked about the town manager's salary at the Sept. 16 budget discussion, Treasurer Councilman Michael Coté said the line item should not be altered.
