Miniatures Exhibition Oct. 4 to 27 at Rehoboth Art League
The Rehoboth Art League announces the upcoming Miniatures Exhibition which will showcase the unique art form based on a minute scale. Miniatures as an art form trace back to book paintings and illuminated manuscripts in the seventh century. This exhibition will run from Oct. 4 to 27, with the opening from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4.
The Miniatures Exhibition features more than 120 works by more than 60 artists from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and as far away as Florida, Maine, Tennessee, and California. This exhibition features artwork made in oil, acrylic, watercolor, etching and sculpture.
A work of fine art in miniature is a particularly personal object that draws the viewer into an intimate, concentrated little world that is breathtaking in its execution. A miniature usually takes as long or longer to produce than a large piece of art. Every detail is miniaturized - the scale of the subject matter, the brush or pencil strokes - so that only with high magnification can one behold the details of the artist’s technique which may include stippling, hatching or pointillism.
These techniques are specialized means of producing a perfect balance of color and detail in a series of thinly applied layers of color intended to reflect light. The miniatures show a high standard of design and the artist’s mastery of the chosen media and palette. Miniature art sometimes defeats the spectator's belief as to what is possible for the artist to create in such a small space.
The judge for this show is Narissa Steel, president of the Miniature Painters, Sculptures & Gravers Society, Washington D.C. The Rehoboth Art League offered thanks to Steel and the Miniature Painters, Sculptures & Gravers Society for their mentoring of the first Miniatures Show at the Rehoboth Art League. MPSES and Le and Ed Rowell have sponsored awards which will be presented at the opening reception.
In addition to the Miniatures Show, the second Monthly Pairings Show will be on exhibit in the Mini Gallery in the Corkran. Details of this show will be available soon.
