Lewes — For the past year, the brightly decorated mobile VA clinic has been serving veterans at American Legion and VFW posts across Delaware and New Jersey.

The mobile clinic offers a local, appointment-free way for service men and women to receive healthcare. The 40-foot vehicle travels from the VA's main medical center in Wilmington to southern Delaware and southern New Jersey, following a monthly schedule, spending one day at each location.

Sen. Tom Carper, a veteran who served three tours in Vietnam, toured the outreach clinic June 30 in Lewes. Not everybody can make it to the VA facility in Georgetown, he said, highlighting the importance of reaching out to serve veterans.

Carper also learned about services from Michele Kuhn, nurse practitioner of the clinic since its first stop in July 2013. It offers physicals, immunizations, blood draws and other services. With a social worker, nurse practitioner and a licensed practical nurse on board, the clinic offers veterans an easy way to find out what services are available to them.

Kuhn says the clinic gets busy at certain stops, including Laurel.

“The biggest challenge is keeping the flow,” she says.

The mobile unit is scheduled to be back in Lewes at American Legion Post 17 Monday, July 14.

Appointments are not necessary, but those who want to schedule one should call Licensed Practical Nurse Alisha Delgado, at 302-668-4371.
