Mother grateful for Midway Lions Club

By Eileen Smith | Jul 24, 2014

The following letter was sent to the Midway Lions Club with a copy submitted to the Cape Gazette for publication.

On January 14, the Midway Lions Club visited Kids Cottage Preschool where they performed vision screenings. My three children have all attended Kids Cottage and participated in this screening event during their preschool years. I have always been thankful for this service, but truly never appreciated the profound impact of such screenings.

This changed when my youngest child was assessed January 14. Astigmatism was detected and follow-up was strongly encouraged. We were very surprised as we had no idea his vision might be impaired. We immediately made an appointment at the Delaware Eye Institute. His astigmatism was confirmed and bilateral hyperopia was also diagnosed. Glasses were prescribed and the physician even remarked how fortunate he was to have been seen by the Lions Club at such an early age.

Now, over three months later, wearing glasses has become second nature to my 4-year-old. He puts them on the minute he wakes up and removes them at bedtime. Our family has adjusted to life with a busy little boy and his glasses - constantly wiping sticky fingerprints from the lenses, locating them under the swing set, and nearly weekly frame adjustments! And every day I feel extremely blessed that the Lions Club conducted a vision screening on my child.

I cannot thank you enough for your active interest in our community and your unwavering commitment to sight preservation. You have made life clearer for my little boy and greatly impacted his future.

A grateful mother
