Mountaire leads efforts to curb 'Hunger, Hurt, Hate' during the holidaysVolunteers will be on hand Nov. 2 seeking donations in Cape Region
No one has to travel 7,000 miles to find "Hunger, Hurt and Hate." Within seven minutes of home, place of worship, school and workplace there is the growing problem of hunger feeding hurt.
“For the past 19 years, we have met the challenge to curb the potential growth of hunger to hurt by providing the basics of nutritious meals to those who are hurting - hopefully to begin the healing process for those who no longer feel the pains of hunger,” said Roger Marino, Mountaire corporate director of community relations.
Mountaire and area communities have provided thousands of canned and boxed food items along with a Mountaire roaster to local residents and families who might go without a meal during the holiday season on the Delmarva Peninsula.
The program began with Thanksgiving for Thousands, a food program that now provides basics to almost 50,000 people on the three-state peninsula.
Thanksgiving has become a trilogy of food events and a time to give thanks for all the good things the Lord has provided. So Mountaire began providing Thanksgiving at Christmas for food shelters, soup kitchens and food pantries. And now they have a Thanksgiving trilogy that has evolved into Thanksgiving at Easter to provide boxed, canned food and a roaster within the community churches, focusing on individual members at their place of worship.
On Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., volunteers from American Legion posts in Sussex and Kent counties, along with church and other community volunteers, will be positioned at these Delaware stores; Giant Foods, Long Neck; Safeway, Rehoboth Beach; Walmart, Rehoboth Beach; Walmart, Georgetown; Walmart, Seaford; Walmart, Milford; Food Lion, Milton and Hocker’s, Ocean View.
As in the past, they will distribute fliers to patrons seeking their purchase of the following canned and boxed goods in cooperation with the various store managers: canned peas, corn, yams, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix and brownie mix will be the order of the day.
