U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development joined Milford Housing Development Corporation, Delaware’s leading nonprofit affordable housing provider, to celebrate June as National Homeownership Month with a work day event June 11 at Jefferson Crossroads in Lincoln.

The day featured speakers, followed by group volunteer construction on two MHDC Self-Help homes at Jefferson Crossroads in Lincoln. Speakers included USDA Rural Development State Director Dr. Bill McGowan; USDA Rural Development Chief of Staff Katharine Ferguson from Washington, D.C.; Delaware State Housing Authority Director of Housing Development Susan Eliason, and MHDC President/CEO David Moore. Also in attendance were Kate Rohrer representing Sen. Chris Coons, Karen McGrath representing Sen. Tom Carper, and state Rep. Harvey Kenton, R-Milford.

“Self-help housing is a wonderful program for all, and we feel fortunate to work alongside Milford Housing Development Corporation to provide this type of affordable, attractive homeownership opportunity for the citizens of Delaware,” said McGowan.

“Homeownership has long been the cornerstone of the American dream, and affordable financing - like the options provided through USDA’s rural housing programs - creates ladders of opportunity to help families grow and thrive.”

“We have been a Mutual Self-Help organization since 1998,” said David Moore, MHDC president. “MHDC averages about 10 homes per year and has assisted over 165 families; I think that is something that rural America and rural Delaware should be really proud of."

The Self-Help Housing Program is MHDC’s premier homeownership program. The program was established by USDA Rural Development over 40 years ago for very-low- to low-income families, utilizing a sweat equity model. MHDC is the only agency in Delaware offering the program and has helped more than 165 families realize their dream of homeownership. Currently, MHDC’s Self-Help families average $35,000 in sweat equity per home.
