Millsboro Bake Shop owner and head baker Glenn Ward says his new downtown business has received a a warm welcome.

"I knew there was a demand in this area," he said. "As soon as I heard there was a place available downtown, I called the landlord and he held it for us."

It didn't hurt that his landlord was familiar with Ward's former bakery, It's a Wonderful Loaf, which quickly became a Cape Region favorite in the early 2000s.  At a recent grand opening, Ward said, the mayor proclaimed the business Millsboro's first true bakery.

Millsboro Bake Shop is staffed by family, with Ward's daughters, Katie and Bethany - young children at the time of the first bakery - now assuming responsibilities as the fourth generation of bakers.

Throughout the day, the air at Millsboro Bake Shop is perfumed with the sweet smells of the breads, cookies, cakes, croissants and tarts sold fresh out of the oven, literally.

With 40 years in the biz, the baker said he can make just about anything, and typically that is just what he does each day, baking enough goods to stock the shop and fill orders for cakes and specialty orders for ethnic desserts.

"Its just spur-of-the-moment," Ward said of the goods he bakes to stock his shelves daily. "I guess I should say no, but I don't, the customers are so awesome."

And that is part of the reason, Ward said, he has had an overwhelmingly warm welcome from the patrons and business community in downtown Millsboro.

On a typical visit, customers can be heard inquiring about Ward's new grandbaby or picking up special orders the baker whipped up as a favor in scenes reminiscent of Andy Griffith's town of Mayberry.

"I highly recommend the Millsboro Bake Shop. Glenn is a great guy, and he has an excellent product and service," said Wes McCallum, pastor of The Journey church in Millsboro on a recent visit to pick up the hot cross buns he requested for Holy Week. "I can't speak well enough for his business; this is excellent."

When the Millsboro Farmers Market opens, the baker said he plans to stay busy, offering a wider variety of his baked goods there.  With his speedy success downtown, Ward is already looking to expand the  operation with additional ovens.

"It's all I know how to do, and I enjoy it," he said. "It's long hours, but if you know what you are doing, the people just rally around you."

Millsboro Bake Shop, 212 Main St., Millsboro, is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with expanded hours planned for the summer season. For more information, call 302-934-1599.
