A ceremony was held June 13 at Cape Henlopen High School to dedicate two new benches for students to sit on while out in the school’s courtyard. The benches are the result of a fundraising effort to financially assist the children of Mike and Priscilla Saez, two Cape employees who tragically passed away in a car accident last June.

Cape Henlopen High School’s ninth-grade English teacher Eileen Springfield gave the Saez children’s trust fund a $1,000 check after selling two benches to local organizations. The benches are made of sturdy, maintenance-free recycled plastic and will last for years. The benches were assembled and engraved by students Albert Gilbert and Storm Reese from Bill Griswold’s Processes of Design and Engineering classes. They used a computer-numerical-controlled router machine to engrave inspirational quotes onto the benches.

Surf Bagel bought one bench, and the school’s Student Government Association bought the other. Surf Bagel’s message on the bench reminds the students to learn to surf when life throws waves at them, and the SGA’s bench is a tribute to the Class of 2014. The benches will be kept in the school’s courtyard.

“It’s a win-win situation,” said Springfield. “The benches are a one-time donation that will last for years to come. Plus they serve a dual purpose: they provide much-needed seating for the courtyard, and they help the Saez children with future financial needs.”

CHHS Principal Brian Donahue is pleased with the new addition to the school. “This is a great real-life learning experience for our students, as well as a wonderful way to remember Mike and Priscilla Saez,” he said.
