New discount card highlights local culinary initiative
Nine months after successfully launching its new Local on the Menu culinary initiative, Southern Delaware Tourism announced the addition of a new discount card program that will further enhance the program.
The discount card, which can be printed at localonthemenu.com, provides diners with multiple discounts at several local establishments. Examples include a free dessert at the Brick Hotel in Georgetown, 10 percent off culinary items at Lavender Fields Farm near Harbeson, 10 percent off plants at East Coast Garden Center in Oak Orchard and a free nosh at Hobos Restaurant and Bar in Rehoboth Beach.
“We have been very pleased thus far with the positive response we’ve received on this new program, which brings our providers and our restaurants together in a mutually beneficial relationship,” says Scott Thomas, executive director of SDT.
The Local on the Menu program is an extension of SDT’s popular Come to the Culinary Coast - Life Tastes Better Here initiative that has helped spur southern Delaware’s tourism industry for the better part of the last three years.
It serves as a way to connect restaurants and producers, jointly supporting locally owned, independent businesses that help maintain the small-town charm found in Delaware’s southernmost county.
To be eligible for the Local on the Menu initiative, restaurants must purchase food on a regular basis from at least one Sussex County farm to be used in a minimum of four food items. By participating in the program, these restaurants will be permitted to use a specially designed logo that will identify them as being a part of the initiative.
There are currently two dozen local restaurants and 15 producers participating in the Local on the Menu program.
Funding for the program was obtained by Southern Delaware Tourism via a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Rural Development’s Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program.
