Bonini endorses Simpler for state treasurer
Sen. Colin Bonini, R-Dover South, has announced his support of Ken Simpler for state treasurer. Bonini lost to current State Treasurer Chip Flowers Jr. in 2010.
Simpler, a Republican from Newark, filed for the position March 14. He is a Rehoboth Beach native and is the chief financial officer for the Rehoboth Beach-based Seaboard Hotels.
There are two Democratic candidates.
The incumbent Flowers, from Middletown, filed his paperwork on March 5. He has held the position since January 2011.
Sean Barney, from Smyrna, filed Feb. 18 and most recently has served as policy director for Gov. Jack A. Markell.
Construction to resume for Route 1/Route 30
The Delaware Department of Transportation announces that construction will resume again Monday, April 21, for the Route 1 and Route 30 grade separated intersection in Milford.
DelDOT’s contractor, George & Lynch Inc., will continue working to complete the bridge construction which consists of the bridge deck, parapet walls and parapet safety fence. Construction is anticipated for completion in June 2014, pending weather.
Motorists can adjust their routes or travel times by using DelDOT’s Smartphone application. The DelDOT App is available for Apple & Android smartphones and tablets, and can be downloaded free at the Apple and Google Play stores, or go to www.DelDOT.gov and click on the link to stores.
Rehoboth unveils new recycling schedule
First State Disposal will begin a new recycling pickup schedule Friday, May 2, in Rehoboth Beach with pickup coming every Friday.
The once-per-week schedule will last until Friday, Sept. 26, and applies to all residents in the city’s recyclables collection program.
Briggs King sets two meet-and-greets
Join state Rep. Ruth Briggs King, R-Georgetown, for her next set of meet-and-greet sessions with constituents.
The schedule is as follows:
• Wednesday, April 23, between 8 and 9 a.m. at Georgetown Family Restaurant (115 East Market St.)
• Wednesday, May 14, between 6 and 8 p.m. at the Long Neck CHEER Center (in the Shoppes at Long Neck).
Residents of the 37th District are invited to stop by one of these meetings, ask a question or share a concern or just listen to the conversation. Topics will include district-related matters and state government issues.
Rehoboth offices to close Good Friday
The Rehoboth Beach administrative offices will be closed Friday, April 18, for Good Friday.
There will be no trash pickup April 18; regular trash pickup will resume Monday, April 21.
Sussex council presents nonprofit grants
Sussex County Council presented the following grants during its April 1 meeting: $2,000 to John M. Clayton Elementary School in Frankford to support its student mentoring program; $500 to Delaware 4-H Association to help send five members of the Bridgeville Mustangs Club to a Washington, D.C. conference; $600 to American Cancer Society for the Eastern/Coastal Relay for Life; $1,000 to Greenwood Police Department for National Night Out; $1,000 to Carlisle Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary for uniform shirts and aprons; and $500 to the Marine Corps League Foundation, Delaware Devil Dogs Detachment 780 golf tournament. Council also awarded youth grants of $1,000 to Trap Pond Partners for Healthy Kids Day and $1,000 to Delaware Technical Community College for Kids on Campus scholarships.
