NKF-MD to hold Southern Delaware Kidney Walk April 27
The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland will hold its sixth annual Southern Delaware Kidney Walk Sunday, April 27, at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes.
Approximately 500 people are expected to participate in the community fundraiser, which calls attention to the need for organ donation and prevention of kidney disease, the ninth leading cause of death in the United States.
“One out of every nine Americans has or will develop chronic kidney disease, and most affected do not realize it until the condition has progressed,” said Nicole Scharf, NKF-MD’s director of field services for the Eastern Shore. “By teaming up for the Kidney Walk, we hope those at risk will hear the message and get their kidneys checked.”
Kristy Ferracci, an F.M.C. dialysis technician who donated a kidney to her husband, will return to chair this dog-friendly event. Check-in and festivities begin at 9 a.m. at the Picnic Pavilion. The walk will kick off at 10 a.m. Participants can choose from a 3.2-mile trail or a shorter trail for strollers and wheelchairs.
Everyone can enjoy refreshments from Surf Bagel and Aquafina, music from Moonbeam Entertainment and the Kidney Kids Corner with face painting and games. With a $10 donation, dogs and owners can be a part of the Kidney Paws for a Cause and receive a goody bag with dog treats as well as engraved dog tags from All Aboard Grooming and Kennels.
There is no registration fee, but Cape Henlopen State Park charges an entrance fee of $4 for vehicles registered in Delaware and $8 for vehicles registered outside Delaware.
All Kidney Walk participants who raise a minimum of $100 will earn a 2013 Kidney Walk T-shirt.

NKF-MD will hold a total of four Kidney Walks, including a second Delmarva-area walk May 4 at Salisbury’s Winterplace Park. The walks are locally presented by the Charles T. Bauer Foundation. Top sponsors include Beebe Healthcare, Fresenius Medical Care, The Greene Turtle of Lewes, Nephrology Associates, Questcor and Walgreen’s.
Funds raised through Kidney Walk will directly support NKF-MD’s patient services, education and research efforts. More than 4,000 people participated in the 2013 Kidney Walk events, which raised more than $430,000. For more information, visit www.kidneymd.org.
