Noted environmental author Tom Horton to talk at Sept. 13 meeting of ESWA

Delmarva author and environmentalist Tom Horton will be the guest speaker at the Eastern Shore Writers Association monthly meeting at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, at Vinny’s La Roma Restaurant, 934 S. Salisbury St. in Salisbury, Md. He will present “Writing About Delmarva: The Land and Water Around You.”

Horton is a professor of environmental studies at Salisbury University. He is also one of the most respected nature writers in the U.S., winner of the best book on nature in 1988, as well as the recipient of the David Brower Award from the Sierra Club and other awards from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Audubon Society. He is an avid kayaker and camper along Delmarva’s waterways.

His devotion to Delmarva’s environment is found in his books: “ An Island Out of Time: A Memoir of Smith Island in the Chesapeake” and “Turning the Tide: Saving the Chesapeake Bay.” Other publications include “Bay Country and Swanfall: Journey of the Tundra Swans.” He is also a contributor to National Geographic, Rolling Stone, and Time.

The Eastern Shore Writers Association has more than 250 members across Delmarva. The organization sponsors the Bay to Ocean Writers Conference every February and publishes the Delmarva Review each autumn. ESWA also holds workshops and literary get-togethers.
