Officials continue checking shores for missing swimmer
State park officials continue to monitor the shorelines for a swimmer who has been missing since June 29.
Jeff King, 34, of Jordanville, N.Y., was swimming at 7:30 a.m. at the southeast Day Area Beach in the Delaware Seashore State Park when he began to have difficulties swimming, said Capt. Wayne Kline, chief of enforcement for the Delaware State Parks.
King's friend tried to help him, but he could not hold on to him, Kline said. Other swimmers called 911 and a water rescue team from Bethany Beach Fire Co. that was training in the Indian River Inlet responded in less than a minute, Kline said.
The Bethany rescuers were joined by officials from Lewes, U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the Delaware State Police. The group searched for more than two hours before suspending the search, Kline said.
Kline said the surf was moderate and tide was outgoing in a north direction when King went missing.
"It's not predictable where he could end up," he said.
