You probably know Sam Calagione as the mastermind behind Dogfish Head.

I recently had a chance to speak with Calagione and find out some little-known facts about one of our area’s “hoppiest” personalities.

What would be your favorite beer if you couldn’t drink DFH?

There are so many I love. I almost hate to answer that. The one I have in my house the most is Sierra Nevada. They are considered the pioneers of the craft-brewing movement and they are the first that Dogfish Head ever collaborated with.

So if you are cooking for your family, what’s the food you're probably making?

Either cheeseburgers or steak on the outdoor grill, with mushroom and onion sauce that  goes on top.

Are you a good cook?

No, my wife is way better and more prolific. I do like coming up with beer recipes which is one of my main jobs. That is my favorite part of the job.

What would you be doing If you weren’t brewing beer for a living?

I've always dreamed someday about teaching literature in high school. I enjoy pushing my kids to read and reading with them.

Oh really? So, what’s your favorite book?

I’m reading “Moby Dick” right now and I love that. I really enjoy Ernest Hemingway and I read “The Great Gatsby” every year.

What’s a personality quirk that people would be surprised to learn about you?

My secret love of Frank Sinatra. We've collaborated with The Grateful Dead and Pearl Jam and the next band [we are collaborating with] is called Guided By Voices and they are a pretty boisterous rock band. But my parents are Italian and I grew up listening to Frank Sinatra records.

Do you have any family pets and is there anything interesting about them?

We have a pug named Kiki. She looks like a cat crossed with a monkey. I love Kiki, but I don’t like her. I get to choose next, and I always get labrador retrievers.
