Rehoboth Beach — It’s a time of year on par with Christmas for Rehoboth Beach locals: the day parking meters are covered up for the winter.

City parking department crews began covering up meters Sept. 16.

City Manager Greg Ferrese said the city figures to end up $36,000 short of its budgeted parking revenue goal. The city budgeted $2.815 million in parking revenue but figures to end up with $2.779 million, Ferrese said. He said he was happy the city even came close to its budgeted goal after rain washed out several early summer weekends.

Ferrese said more people used the Parkmobile pay-by-phone system this year. The city had 168,000 hits on the service this year, compared to 115,000 last year, he said. The city sold 609 of the new scooter parking permits, Ferrese said.

Other summer regulations are also on the wane:

  • Parking permits ended Sept. 3
  • As of Monday, Sept. 30, left hand turns will be allowed on Rehoboth Avenue
  • Dogs and bikes will also be allowed on the Boardwalk after Sept. 30.
