Pedestrian, 37, dies in Route 1 crash

DART bus strikes man walking northbound on highway

A 37-year-old man was struck by a Delaware Transit Corporation bus July 11 as he walked in a northbound lane of Route 1 near the Shuttle Road intersection.

Delaware State Police are investigating the 9:30 p.m. crash.

George A. Bryant was driving a DART bus and was changing from the bus travel lane into the turning lane, in order to make a left onto Shuttle Road. Immediately upon turning into the turn lane, the bus struck a pedestrian walking with his bicycle northbound in the roadway with his back to traffic. Police said the pedestrian, who was not carrying a flashlight, was struck by the bus from behind.

The pedestrian, who is not being identified at this time pending notification of next of kin, was thrown forward and landed against the east edge of the median. The bus partially ran over the bicycle, which remained lodged under the left front, as the bus stopped in the turn lane. Police said there was no flashlight attached to the bicycle.

EMS took the pedestrian to Beebe Medical Center, where he died. He was not carrying a flashlight while walking in the roadway, and there was no flashlight attached to his bicycle.

Bryant was properly restrained and was not injured in the collision. The bus he was operating, a 2010 Gillig, was empty and was out of service.

Delaware Secretary of Transportation Shailen Bhatt said in a July 12 press release that following DelDOT procedures, Bryant was immediately taken to a local medical facility for drug and alcohol testing.

"Everyone at DART deeply regrets this loss of life and our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of this individual,” Bhatt said. He also said the crash would be investigated by law enforcment

Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation.
