Thoughts From the Sidelines

Phillies' wins are way too late!

By Sumner Spence | Sep 12, 2013

Last weekend the Phillies swept the Atlanta Braves in a three-game series at home. I actually got to attend in person on Sunday and witnessed a rare win. That was enjoyable even with the poor season that we all have witnessed this year. It is inconsequential in terms of the playoffs at this point, but it showed the newer team members that the core Phillies team still wants to win games. And doing it against the best team in our division was pretty satisfying for a die-hard Phillies fan like myself. If the Phillies continue playing like this for the rest of the season, Ryan Sandberg deserves to remain the manager.

I was very impressed with the Eagles' performance this week against Washington. Although we saw the offense perform pretty well in the preseason, the defense was a completely different story. Monday's showing was a great opportunity to see the entire team play so well but they still have a lot to prove. I hope they can continue turning the football over at least once a game, but we can't expect three turnovers every week. Let's hope the same team shows up for the game against San Diego next week.

The US Open tennis tournament ended this weekend with the number one seeds Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams winning. It was kind of cool that they both played the number two seeds for those championship matches. There were some really strong matches in the course of the event, but does anyone else think it was odd as to why CBS and the USTA decided to have the men's final on the opening night of Monday night football?

Last week I screwed up in terms of the amount of tournament left in the FedEx cup. I'm surprised none of my readers called me out on it. I forgot that there are only two rounds left to play. One in Chicago this weekend with the final round will in Atlanta. Both events should be good TV viewing.
