Erich Traum, DPT, of Aquacare Physical Therapy in Millsboro, attended a Parkinson Wellness Recovery Certification course Oct. 26 and 27. The focus of the course was to translate current research into exercises that result in neurological improvements in the treatment approaches for individuals with Parkinson's disease.

The course utilizes principles of big and fast movements to target multiple symptoms of Parkinson's disease including bradykinesia, rigidity, and episodes of freezing.  Recent research in patients with Parkinson's disease shows those who participate in these type of daily, focused exercises have been shown to optimize and improve their brain health, known as neuroplasticity. The daily exercise routines are taught by trained physical therapists with the intent that they will become part of the patient's daily home exercise program.
