Pickled Pig Pub to showcase Delaware craft beers April 7-13

Apr 04, 2014

The Pickled Pig Pub will mark its fifth anniversary by featuring beers brewed and distributed in Delaware. The fifth annual First State Beer Week will be held Monday-Sunday, April 7-13 at The Pickled Pig Pub’s Harbor Square location at 18756 Route 1. Beer Director Ben Cowell has put together the seven-day program to highlight to the quality craft beers being made locally. During First State Beer Week, all 14 of the pub’s taps will be dedicated to microbrews made solely in Delaware.

A craft brewer produces less than 2 million barrels of beer annually. Brewers are also known for better quality ingredients and purer methods of brewing versus the mass-produced beers. Dogfish Head is the state’s first and most well-known craft brewery. Dogfish Head grew from humble beginnings in 1995 in Rehoboth Beach to international brand name recognition today. The pub’s First State Beer Week aims to focus on the many breweries that have opened their doors in the 19 years since. Delaware now ranks 16th in the nation for breweries per capita, no small feat for the Small Wonder state.

Mispillion River, Milford; 3rd Wave, Delmar; Twin Lakes, Greenville; 16 Mile, Georgetown; Fordham-Old Dominion, Dover; Stewart’s, Bear; and Dogfish Head, Rehoboth/Milton will all be represented. Each day will be devoted to a specific brewery, and the week will end with Kick the Keg specials on Sunday. Some of the brewers from the various companies will be on hand during the pub’s daily happy hours from 3 to 6 p.m. to meet and greet with anyone interested in stopping by to talk beer. Chef Ian Mangin will create daily specials that incorporate and complement the many styles of beers available.

The Pickled Pig Pub opened its doors in April 2009, with the goal of bringing a great variety of quality beers to the region. In pairing with Delaware breweries each year for this event, The Pickled Pig staff hopes to raise awareness of the unique and special beers made locally.
