Play ball! Milton Little League opens 2013 seasonStation 85's Hopkins and Warrington honored
The Milton Little League Parade to commence opening day is timeless, with Pop Pop Denny Hughes driving a fire truck purchased for $8,300 some 60 years ago. Most of the coaches are parents and former Milton Little Leaguers themselves, and there are a slew of grandparents knocking about, many related to each other through their children.
As part of the day's celebrations, Milton does a golf ball drop from a ladder truck. All balls in the hole get prize money. This year the ball drop raised about $4,500 and Scott Wilkins, a coach, was the first name drawn for a prize of $1,000, which he was pressured either to give back or buy boiled dogs for all the players in the league.
Terri Betts Carey received a plaque from Derek Clifton for 10 years of service.
Milton Fire Department President Johnny Hopkins threw out the first baseball caught by Seth Workman while Mary Ann Warrington, president of the MFD Ladies Auxiliary, threw out the first softball.
