Police: Driver crashes into police car

May 02, 2014

A 42-year-old Maryland man drove into the rear of a police car pulled over May 1 on Route 1 in Fenwick Island before overturning and trapping the driver and passenger inside, police say.

A 33-year-old Fenwick Island police officer had stopped a 2005 Toyota Sequoia on the shoulder of northbound Route 1 at 9:45 p.m. near Lewes Street for suspected drunk driving, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.

The officer was in a 2013 Ford Explorer patrol vehicle with Toyota driver, Shawn E. Moran, 59, of Wilmington, when a 2010 Nissan Maxima driven by Heath Clifford McDermott of Bel Air, Md., was driving northbound on Route 1 and struck the left rear of the police vehicle, Fournier said.

The impact pushed the police vehicle into the rear of the Toyota Sequoia; the Nissan continued northbound and overturned onto its roof, trapping McDermott and a 48-year-old Florida woman.

All involved in the accident had nonlife-threatening injuries, Fournier said.

McDermott was flown to Christiana Hospital where he is currently admitted; the Florida woman was taken to Beebe Healthcare; the officer and driver Moran and his two passengers – a 58-year-old Wilmington man and a 60-year-old Charleston, S.C., man – were all treated and released from Beebe Healthcare.

Route 1 north of Fenwick Island was closed for about an hour and a half during the investigation.
