Police: Millsboro man crashes after fleeing traffic stop
A Millsboro man, 27, crashed his car Jan. 14 after police say he refused to stop while speeding.
Michael A. Denney was driving westbound on Route 24 at 9:12 p.m. when a trooper clocked him speeding, said Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
The trooper activated his lights and was preparing to pull Denney's car to the shoulder when Denney sped away on Route 24 and turned right onto Indian Mission Road, Fournier said. Denney then went westbound on Friendship Road and failed to stop at the intersection of Cannon Road. He turned left onto Cannon Road, lost control of his vehicle and slid into a ditch on the east side of the road, Fournier said.
Police charged Denney with disregarding a police officer’s signal, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, failure to stop at a stop sign, speeding and several other traffic-related charges. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $4,550 secured bond.
A passenger in his car, Samantha R. Rau, 19, of Lewes was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and released on a criminal summons.
No one was injured in the crash, Fournier said.
