Police: Milton motorcyclist alive

Sep 03, 2013

Delaware State Police have confirmed Robert E. Butler, 27, of Milton, is alive.

A news release sent out to media outlets Sept. 3 contained incorrect information, stating the man had succumbed to injuries sustained in an Aug. 31 motorcycle accident on the Indian River Inlet bridge.

Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said state police received inaccurate information from the Office of the Medical Examiner regarding Butler's condition.

Butler remains in critical condition in Med-Star Washington Hospital Center's Intensive Care Unit. He was initially taken to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, but was later transferred.

Fournier said Butler was driving his 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle at a high rate of speed northbound on Route 1 about 2:10 a.m. When Butler reached the crest of the bridge, he collided with the rear end of a 2004 Chevrolet van operated by Eli M. Stapleford, 25, of Lincoln. Butler was ejected from motorcycle after it careened to the right and struck a concrete barrier.

Stapleford was not injured.

The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into the accident.
