Possum Point Players celebrate 40th anniversary with 'Les Miserables'Performances run weekends Sept. 20 through Oct. 6
To celebrate their 40th anniversary, the Possum Point Players will be the first theatrical group in Delaware and the Delmarva Peninsula to present the complete version of "Les Miserables," the winner of eight Tony awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Direction of a Musical.
Performances will be at Possum Hall, 441 Old Laurel Rd., Georgetown, on Sept. 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29 and Oct. 4, 5 and 6 at 7:30 p.m. for Friday and Saturday performances and 2 p.m. for Sunday matinees. Tickets are $23 for adults and $22 for students and seniors. Tickets are on sale online at www.possumpointplayers.org or by calling the PPP ticketline at 302-856-4560.
"Les Miserables" was not on PPP’s original 2013 schedule because the rights to perform the show in a community theater were not yet available. However, the rights became available early in 2013 for the first time ever. Board member and show director Kenney Workman said, “We thought this was a perfect way to observe the Possums’ 40th anniversary in a special way. Not every group that applies for the rights to perform the show is successful, but the Possums were told in January that they had been granted the rights, but the news could not be released publicly until April.”
Shortly after PPP revealed it would be producing the show this fall, plans for a Broadway revival of "Les Mis" in 2014 were announced, and community theater rights to perform the show became unobtainable. “That makes PPP’s 40th anniversary production of 'Les Mis' even more special,” said Workman.
There are some challenges in bringing "Les Mis" to a community theater stage. First, the show is basically an opera. “There are really no spoken lines in the show - everything is sung. And many of the roles are very difficult from a vocal perspective,” Workman said.
Then there’s the stage. The show has always been done on a large revolving stage, which the Possums do not have. But Workman says this production at Possum Hall will give the audience “a much more up close and personal production then they are used to seeing, if they have seen 'Les Mis' previously. I am happy to say that my team and cast are meeting all of the production challenges head-on and I think audiences will be delighted with the results. The vocal quality is astounding. If you do not have tickets yet, get them soon. It is going to be an amazing celebration of the Possums’ 40th anniversary.”
"Les Misérables" is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International. All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI, 421 West 54th St., New York, NY 10019; phone: 212-541-4684; fax:212-397-4684; http://www.mtishows.com.
