Psychologist to discuss 'Being in the Present Moment' June 26Summer Spirituality Series continues at St. Peter's Church
Dr. Bill Shearer will discuss “Being in the Present Moment: A Scriptural and Alternative Medicine Perspective” at the Summer Spirituality Series Thursday, June 26. The weekly presentations are held in the Parish Hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 211 Mulberry St. in Lewes, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Scripture, especially words of Jesus, is replete with references to being in the present moment. Come listen to the thoughts of contemporary stress management experts, theologians/philosophers, and spiritual writers (Eric Tolle, Jon Kabat-Zinn, John Wellwood, etc) and also, share experiences as they explore how being present can transform themselves and those around them.
Shearer holds a Ph.D. in psychology from Ohio State University and was a professor at SUNY Potsdam, teaching and doing research in human learning, memory, cognition, and neuropsychology. He has also served as a sport/exercise psychology consultant to college and elite athletes and specializes in stress management, use of imagery to facilitate performance, and attention/focusing/relaxation techniques. He also received a master of divinity from Drew University and has served as a United Methodist local pastor and interim Wesley Foundation Campus pastor at the University of Delaware.
He is also a certified yoga teacher and currently teaches at the Newark Senior Center, the University of Delaware, the LeeAnne Nelson Physical Therapy Clinic in Maryland and at his own Milton Yoga studio as part of the Milton Wellness Center. He and his wife, Mary Van House, started the Center eight months ago, offering yoga, psychotherapy (Counseling for Life’s Transitions), pastoral counseling and sport psychology services.
Shearer’s expertise, experience, and varied interests have led him to personally pursue, and professionally promote, an integrated, holisitic approach which emphasizes body, mind, breath, and spirit, and living in the moment.
Each Thursday night, through Aug. 28, expert presenters will engage participants in the parish hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, at 211 Mulberry St., Lewes. Fellowship and locally owned Kings ice cream will follow each presentation. They invite and encourage everyone to attend these free sessions, which are designed for reflection and dialogue. It is a chance to learn more about a fascinating topic and engage in subsequent discussion.
In addition to providing spiritual resources for those seeking greater understanding of their own religious, or learning about others, Seekers uses the net proceeds from their store to help those in need, including the Cape Henlopen Food Basket, Doctors without Borders, work in Haiti and Centro Infantil in San Miguel de Allende.
