Rain doesn't stop CAMP Rehoboth's Volunteers on VacationGroups spruces up Lewes Senior Center before annual yard sale
Fifteen members of Volunteer on Vacation turned out April 12 to tend and restore the gardens at the Lewes Senior Center. This project was held in conjunction with CAMP Rehoboth's Women's Fest, a spring tradition that brings fun, arts, entertainment, workshops and community service to Rehoboth.
The Volunteer on Vacation team edged, weeded and mulched the gardens at the senior center. Small shrubs, flowers and ground cover were planted. In addition, several large planter boxes were filled with flowers. Although wet and muddy, the volunteers were rewarded with transformed gardens and the appreciation of the many people who use the center. More than gardens were cultivated as many new friendships were formed.
Lewes Senior Center had its annual yard sale the following day, and visitors commented on how nice the grounds looked. First-time volunteer Judith Nicholas said, “What a great first experience with the Volunteer on Vacation group! Despite the heavy drizzle that dominated the event, a cheerful and hardy group worked to beautify the Lewes Senior Center, which is right down the road from me. I was immediately greeted warmly and put to work. Everyone was laughing, teasing in a way that said longtime friends, not gardeners on a blind date. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.”
Founded in 1967, the Lewes Senior Center is a place for seniors to connect and share their common interests, differing opinions, experiences and more. Services include transportation, group activities and trips, and health and wellness programs. The center has a banquet hall that can accommodate activities for more than 200 people.
